The Governess

Ok, ok this is my LAST post about the Sound of Music- I promise!! I’m bringing you back to the scene in the movie where Fraulein Maria makes the clothes from curtains. Well, I just had to copy that.

This is the actual pavillion used in the movie where Lisl sings ‘I am 16 going on 17’, it’s now in the grounds of Hellbrunn Castle and absolutely worth visiting if you are ever in Salzburg- the castle grounds are very famous too, so there’s lots to see and do.

I found this green patterned cotton which I thought resembled those infamous curtains, and I created a little frock I think maybe slightly more glamorous that Fraulein Maria’s but hey, it’s Barbie.

These shots were taken at Mirabelle Palace and Park, a really beautiful spot close to the centre of Salzburg. You may recognise it as the location where Maria and the children sang ‘Do Re Mi’!

I just had to add this location shot although it doesn’t feature in the movie. Salzburg Castle is truly beautiful and a great spot to explore, it’s high up on a hill and commands fantastic views over Salzburg.

After all of your sightseeing adventures stop a while at one of the cafes, enjoy an apple strudel and the take in that view!

From Venice With Love

New Year, new holiday plans….I’m already dreaming of a summer trip. Oh for a chance to go back to Venice! I wanted to share some more snaps from my recent visit, there was so much to take in over such a short time, but we did try!

When we first arrived we thought going for a gondola ride would be too touristy….but we changed our minds very quickly and we couldn’t wait to go for a trip! So we went on the evening tour, with opera singer accompaniment, cheesy I know, but worth every penny. The sights and sounds as you drift around the canals and under the bridges are unforgettable.

There are plenty of palaces and churches that you must see – don’t dare miss St Mark’s Basilica or the Doges Palace.

There is a fantastic tour that takes you over the Bridge of Sighs , see the view the prisoners would have had …….

….on route to their prison cell……

All this sightseeing needed something suitably chic, this little frock is made in the finest vintage blush pink raw silk, with a darted, fitted bodice and tiny pleats on the straight skirt, all accented with black bow detail and belt. I love dusky pink and black together, so pretty!

Part of the fun in exploring Venice is getting lost and finding wonderful cafes and restaurants…..

Time to dress for dinner in a pretty cream fitted dress with gold belt and pearl brooch, perfect for dining out by the beautiful canals.

Till next time,

A Walk in the Garden

Time for another new summer frock, this is a sailor style navy cotton with a white navy trim collar, white bow and white buttons. There is a pleat at the back with a tiny bow detail. It was perfect for a walk in the garden…..

A nice shot showing the back of the sailor collar ….

These photos were taken at the magnificent Altamont Gardens in County Carlow. Can you see the peacock on the balustrade at the top of the stairs? Unfortunately the house is closed but it looks so beautiful.

Actual Lens Flare…no Photoshop!!!

A better view of the back detail….

This is one of my favourite dresses so far.

Ladies Who Lunch

A lunch invitation at the Big House, what to wear? Well, I thought a white strapless full skirted dress with a marching bolero style jacket would be perfect. I finished it off with a white plaited leather belt, to cinch in the waist. This is a really fine, light vintage cotton worn with a frilly crinoline to make the skirt extra full.

Next frock is a  a rose pink vintage silk dress with ribbon detailing, the skirt is a full gathered skirt, it makes the waist look tiny!

I think the ladies are well dressed for the occasion. The location was Belvedere House in Mullingar, another fantastic old house worth a visit.

Time for aperitifs….

High Crosses and High Fashion

Monasterboice in Co. Louth is famous for it’s High Crosses especially Muiredach’s High Cross. It is from the 10th or possibly 9th Century and really quite beautiful, and regarded as the finest High Cross in Ireland. The ruins are of an early Christian settlement.

In fact there are three High Crosses at Monasterboice, here is another one in the background.

It was back to Mellifont Abbey for these sunny photos. The 50s wriggle dress is light pink silk with ruffle neckline trim and bow. The swing coat is a fabulous pink and orange tweed, with bias cut pockets. A little pillbox hat finishes the look.

Next time you are in Louth visit Mellifont Abbey and Monasterboice, they really are worth the trip.

The Old Abbey

New Season, New Collection! Spring has sprung and this is a new Barbie coat for the occasion. Lavender wool with green diamante buttons, and a matching hat and scarf in a light turquoise colour silk. I love this colour combination.

The location is the beautiful Mellifont Abbey in Louth.

It was a really beautiful sunny day.

New Year, New Collections

I’ve been working on some new pieces and this black and white wool herringbone coat and matching hat with bow was the perfect outfit for a recent road trip. (I was really inspired by some old Doris Day movies!) This is Grange Stone Circle at Lough Gur in Co Limerick, the largest standing Stone Circle in Ireland.

It’s a beautiful drive around the lake…..
