Fraulein Barbie

I’ll admit it- I love dirndl dresses. When I booked my holiday to Vienna I knew I just had to make a dirndl for Barbie. We visited the magnificent Shoenbrunn Palace, what a location! It is such a stunning palace, so much to see and so much history, in fact Marie Antoinette was born and raised here. (hmmm, I think she may inspiration for a future dress too…watch this space.)

I’ve been fascinated with dirndl dresses since my college days when I worked my summers in Munich, it was quite common to see locals in ‘Tracht’ which are traditional garments in German speaking areas, like Bavaria and Austria. A dirndl traditionally involves the fitted bodice on a gathered skirt with a short sleeve blouse and finished off with an apron. A more modern take on it sees dirndls made in fabulous silks and wild colours, with shorter skirts and lower necklines. Apparently how the apron is tied is very important and can tell a lot: a bow on the left means you are single, a bow on the right means you are taken. Well, since Ken is Barbie’s beau she has her bow on the right!

This dirndl is made from vintage raw silk, it’s a dark gold colour, underneath the bodice is a tiny white gathered blouse with bow details and I finished the bodice with tiny silver buttons. I finished it off with a dusty pink apron.

I think she looks the part for Vienna!!

Auf Wiedersehen!

From Venice With Love

img_5531

New Year, new holiday plans….I’m already dreaming of a summer trip. Oh for a chance to go back to Venice! I wanted to share some more snaps from my recent visit, there was so much to take in over such a short time, but we did try!

img_5469

When we first arrived we thought going for a gondola ride would be too touristy….but we changed our minds very quickly and we couldn’t wait to go for a trip! So we went on the evening tour, with opera singer accompaniment, cheesy I know, but worth every penny. The sights and sounds as you drift around the canals and under the bridges are unforgettable.

img_5495

There are plenty of palaces and churches that you must see – don’t dare miss St Mark’s Basilica or the Doges Palace.

There is a fantastic tour that takes you over the Bridge of Sighs , see the view the prisoners would have had …….

img_5514

….on route to their prison cell……

img_5525

All this sightseeing needed something suitably chic, this little frock is made in the finest vintage blush pink raw silk, with a darted, fitted bodice and tiny pleats on the straight skirt, all accented with black bow detail and belt. I love dusky pink and black together, so pretty!

img_5484

Part of the fun in exploring Venice is getting lost and finding wonderful cafes and restaurants…..

img_5599

Time to dress for dinner in a pretty cream fitted dress with gold belt and pearl brooch, perfect for dining out by the beautiful canals.

Till next time,

Venezia

img_5575

Beautiful Venice. We had a few days here in September: gorgeous sunny, warm days. So taking advantage of the fabulous weather and fantastic backdrops we wandered around taking in the sights and soaking up the atmosphere!

Of course I had to make a proper tourist outfit for all that sightseeing: orange gingham peddle pushers with a white broderie anglaise short blouse and finished off with a blue chiffon headscarf.

img_5544

The Grand Canal, isn’t it amazing? We had just stopped by the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, it is based in her villa on the Grand Canal….wow, fabulous building, location and amazing art collection too. The gift shop is almost as good as the museum.

img_5581

After a lot of sightseeing we stopped for a rest on the steps of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute…… they have a collection of several pieces by Titian here. There is fabulous art everywhere you go in Venice.

The afternoon was for eating gelato (absolutely divine) and wandering around the back alleys and narrow streets…before hoping on the night train to Vienna! Join me next time for my Viennese adventure!

Miss Italy

img_5436

Oh it’s cold outside! I decided to have a look at some of my summer holiday photos to cheer me up. First stop on our September vacay was beautiful Bologna- what a great city!

When I was designing a holiday wardrobe I was heavily influenced by the wardrobe of Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, and Gwyneth Paltrow in The Talented Mr Ripley too…..those costumes…swoon!

This dress is made from original vintage fabric, I’m guessing it’s late 50’s early 60s, it’s a blue organza with an embossed white floral print, I thought it would be cute in a full skirt and fitted bodice. I included a white lining and of course a petticoat too. It’s finished off with a little belt detail.

These photos were taken at the Anatomical Theatre of the Archigannasio in Bologna…I urge you to visit if you are there!

Ciao!

Autumn Colours

img_5899

It was a fresh and sunny day at Emo Court, Autumn is here. We had a walk around the grounds bathed in golden sunlight, I loved the palette of colours all around: gold, brown, red, yellow, copper, bronze, and all highlighted by the glorious autumnal sun.

I’ve been busy during the last few months making some new fashions for Barbie, this dress is an off white raw silk with fitted bodice and full gathered skirt.

The bodice has pin tuck details centre front and a navy polka dot tie. I’ve matched this with the belt too. I love how the sunshine makes it appear almost golden.

img_5879

Leaves. Lots of crunchy brown leaves underfoot.

The main house at Emo Court, closed up for the winter now so I will just have to return for another visit!

The frock is in my Etsy shop now, so please drop by and have a look!

Last Days of Summer

img_4641

As the Autumn arrives with cold and windy days I thought I’d try and lift the mood and share some snaps of a bright summer dress taken on my summer holidays! This is a 1950s inspired cotton frock, fitted bodice with pin tucks and yellow buttons, belt and full gathered skirt with petticoat for that extra kick. The fabric is an original 60s cotton floral print but it works so well, doesn’t it?

img_4647

We were driving the Wild Atlantic Way and stopped at the Burren for a look at the fantastic landscape. It was a bit of a grey day so the yellow frock was a nice shot of colour.

img_4645

The pattern of the stones used in the wall construction is pretty amazing too, it’s made without any mortar, the stones are stacked neatly together.

img_4570

Further along the coast we took the turn for Achill Island, this shot was taken overlooking Keel Bay. It is a breathtakingly beautiful island, I absolutely recommend it. It’s just stunning.

img_4731

At last, sunshine!! Killaloe was bright and sunny and a fitting place to stop for coffee and a cake. We had a nice pit stop here on the way home.

See you anon!

High Crosses and High Fashion

IMG_3733

Monasterboice in Co. Louth is famous for it’s High Crosses especially Muiredach’s High Cross. It is from the 10th or possibly 9th Century and really quite beautiful, and regarded as the finest High Cross in Ireland. The ruins are of an early Christian settlement.

IMG_3731

In fact there are three High Crosses at Monasterboice, here is another one in the background.

IMG_3687

It was back to Mellifont Abbey for these sunny photos. The 50s wriggle dress is light pink silk with ruffle neckline trim and bow. The swing coat is a fabulous pink and orange tweed, with bias cut pockets. A little pillbox hat finishes the look.
