An Evening at the Ball

I’m back to my favourite movie and my favourite look from movie… of course it has to be the  fabulous gold evening dress worn by the Baroness Schraeder! Beautiful soft gold satin, draped in a figure hugging full length evening gown, shoestring straps and finished with an oversize tulle rosette and ultra glamorous full length white gloves.

Swoon….here’s the original which I ADORE….

But I think this is more a 1960s version of a glamorous 1930s evening gown? I suspect there is structure (or should I say foundation garment?) under this dress that just would not have been used in the 30s, but hey, I’m ok with that.

The glamorous Baroness really contrasts with Fraulein Maria in her traditional dirndl style frock,

but that’s what a Baroness should do, yes?

So long, farewell,

Auf Wiedersehen,

Goodbye,

The Baroness

When I decided on a trip to Salzburg, I bought plane tickets, booked the hotels and of course, I had to plan my Dinah’s Dolls wardrobe! I was so excited to travel to Austria and the home of The Sound of Music- obviously! And I knew I had to pay homage to The Baroness Schraeder, she was always my favourite. Her costumes were so beautiful, so I made my little tribute to her.

The jacket and skirt are made from a vintage coral coloured linen fabric, I’m guessing 1970s but I think it may be older. I paired it with a vintage cream silk for the bodice and bow. I really went for it with the bow.

Isn’t she so chic? I have always adored her wardrobe. And she has a cigarette holder!
A few more close ups…..
Stay tuned, because I have some more Sound of Music tributes to come……

Somewhere Beyond The Sea

Influenced by Bobby Darin and Grace Kelly, my new design is straight out of the Fifties! This blue silk chiffon is a piece of vintage fabric from old, it’s really soft, delicate and has a fantastic drape.

Floaty and light as a feather, I knew this would make a fabulous homage to Grace Kelly in her beautiful Edith Head designed costume from ‘To Catch a Thief’. She was inspired by Christian Dior, so I think I am in good company.

(The photo is from this great article )

Draped fabric over a fitted bodice, full gathered skirt and matching scarf, perfect for wearing in an open top sports car, the scarf flowing behind in the breeze…..can you picture it?

I made tiny straps from embroidery thread, and the dress is lined with a pale blue fabric to highlight the intense blue of the chiffon. I think I may have to make this dress in my size.

And have a look at the man himself….

Au Revoir!

Ghent in Black and White

Black and White, my favourite – so chic! The perfect combination for my Ghent sightseeing dress.

This 1950s inspired dress is made from a beautiful black vintage taffeta, and so it is perfect for a full skirt as it holds the shape wonderfully. I added a full crinoline underneath to give the skirt an extra lift too!

It’s all in the details, isn’t it? I adore the fine detailing on vintage frocks so this dress was decorated with ribbon and tiny bows.

Some diamonds added the finishing touch.

I stumbled upon this wonderful Ghent house and alley, a matching black and white background, perfect!

Till next time,

Blue and green should never be seen

Here are a few more photos from my recent trip to Belgium, this is a 1950s style swing coat made from a really gorgeous vintage fabric from my stash. It’s 100% wool, I’m guessing this fabric is 1960s- ish. It’s woven as a diamond pattern, not squares and it’s a really vibrant blue and green. I only have a small piece of this fabric, if I had more I would definitely make something for myself!

I accessorised the coat with a little pill box hat and a tiny diamond brooch, I adore costume jewellery and brooches seem to have lost favour, that is such a pity! It really adds the finishing touch.

Isn’t this Ghent door great? The colour combination and design are beautiful! I thought the coat really complimented the colours and pattern.

Belgian Luxe

I’ve been quiet on the blogging front for a while as I’ve been away quite a lot. I know, I know, poor me, huh?! So…. time for me to catch up and share some holiday snaps and some new frocks!  First stop is Belgium, one of my favourite weekend destinations, it has everything you need: delicious food, great beer, fabulous chocolate and amazing shopping!

My newest outfit is an off white vintage silk suit. I’ve wanted to do a Lana Turner style fun fur stole with an outfit for a while so I thought this would be the perfect location for the 1940s inspired suit, turban and wrap.

It’s actually a one piece but I made it to look like a two piece. Tight straight skirt, fitted bodice, bracelet length sleeves, peplum and belt, with a pearl buckle. The wrap is made from some fun fur lined with velvet, and then the look is topped off with a Lana Turner style turban headpiece.

These shots were taken in Leuven, in the Groot Begijnhof, set up in the 13th Century for semi religious unmarried women, it’s like a small village in the middle of Leuven, now owned by the University and used for housing students and academics. Lovingly restored, it’s beautiful place to roam around.

Au Revoir!

Little White Dress

Black and white are so chic together, I adore the simplicity. My new frock is inspired by the 1950’s and Elizabeth Taylor, and this Barbie Doll really works that look.

This fabric is a beautiful vintage duchess satin in pure gleaming white. Fitted bodice, bracelet length sleeves and a fitted wiggle skirt give this a 1950s silhouette.

A big black taffeta belt nips in the waist and a big bow adds some detail over the hip.

It’s simple and clean, and oh so glamorous!!

I went for some simple accessories, a gold beaded bracelet finishes the look. Vienna provided the beautiful backdrop!
